The 1/4 cup is the smallest cup in a standard US set, and it is easy to grab the 1/3 cup by mistake in a crowded drawer. Check the stamp on the handle: the 1/3 cup holds an extra 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp.
If the 1/4 cup is in the dishwasher, 4 level tablespoons do the same job. For butter, it is half a stick, so cut at the 4 Tbsp mark on the wrapper (more on butter stick conversions).
Dry ingredients fill the same 1/4 cup with very different weights: about 30 g (1.06 oz by weight) of spooned all-purpose flour and about 50 g (1.75 oz) of granulated sugar. That gap is why dry and liquid ounces are not interchangeable.
