How many grams fit in a cup depends entirely on what you put in it. A cup of water is about 236 g, a cup of all-purpose flour about 120 g and a cup of granulated sugar about 198 g. The chart below lists the weight of a full cup and its common fractions for 18 everyday baking ingredients.
These weights assume a specific way of filling the cup. Flour and powdered sugar are spooned in and leveled, brown sugar is packed firmly, and granulated sugar and oats are scooped and leveled. Dip the cup straight into a flour bag and you will usually pack in more than 120 g, so the filling method matters as much as the number.

Where these weights come from
Ingredient weights are taken from the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart. Where the source lists a half cup or a tablespoon (butter, honey, maple syrup, rice, cocoa and peanut butter), the figure is scaled up to a full cup. Water is calculated from volume at about 0.998 g per mL. The methodology page explains the constants and rounding.
Why weighing beats cups for baking
Two people filling the same cup with flour rarely end up with the same amount, because flour settles and compresses. A scale reads the same every time, so a cake or loaf turns out the way the recipe writer intended. It also saves washing up: set the bowl on the scale and add each ingredient in turn.
Tips for using a kitchen scale
- Put the empty bowl on the scale and press tare (or zero), then tare again before each new ingredient.
- Switch the display to grams for baking; whole numbers are easier to halve or double.
- Keep the scale on a flat, hard counter.
- Weigh sticky ingredients such as honey and peanut butter instead of scraping them out of a cup.
