About this site

How Many Ounces in a Cup is an independent kitchen reference built and maintained by Alton Vieira. It answers one question well, and the hundred small questions that come right after it: what 1/3 cup is in tablespoons, how much is really in a 15 oz can, what a European recipe means by 250 mL.

The site exists because most answers online are either a bare number or a long article that buries it. Here the answer comes first, then the tool, then the details that matter when you are standing at the counter: which measuring cup or spoon to grab, and when an ounce means weight instead of volume.

How the numbers are checked

Every conversion is calculated by one small engine from exact definitions published by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Nothing is typed in by hand. The engine has automated tests for the tricky cases, such as 1/3 cup = 5 Tbsp + 1 tsp, and the site will not build if a page and the engine disagree. Ingredient weights come from King Arthur Baking’s published ingredient weight chart. The full details are on the methodology page.

Independence

No brand pays for a mention. Brand names that appear (for example, describing a common bottle size) are used only to help you recognize a container. The site is not affiliated with any of them.
