Converting milliliters to cups usually means a European or Australian recipe in one hand and a US measuring set in the other. Divide the mL by 236.6 to get US cups, then round to a cup and spoon combination you can measure. For example, 100 mL comes to about 1/3 cup + 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp, and 500 mL to about 2 cups + 2 Tbsp.
If a recipe was written with metric cups, a line like "1 cup (250 mL)" expects a bit more than a US cup, and adding 1 Tbsp per cup closes the gap. Bottled drinks are usually sold in mL, so 500 mL to cups and 750 mL to cups cover the common sizes.

Rounding mL to kitchen measures
US measuring sets cannot hit most round mL numbers exactly. Rounding to the nearest teaspoon is fine for soups, sauces and marinades. For baking, it is more accurate to weigh dry ingredients than to convert their mL to cups; the grams in a cup chart helps when you need to go between the two.
Common mL amounts in US measures
- 60 mL: about 1/4 cup
- 120 mL: about 1/2 cup
- 250 mL: about 1 cup + 1 Tbsp
- 1,000 mL (1 liter): about 4 1/4 cups, see cups in a liter
