A US gallon holds 4 quarts. Each quart is 2 pints and each pint is 2 cups, so a gallon is also 8 pints, 16 cups or 128 fl oz. Half a gallon is 2 quarts, the size of the common milk and juice carton.
The names describe the ladder: a quart is a quarter of a gallon and a pint is half a quart. Many people learn it from the "gallon man" drawing, a large G with four Q's inside, two P's in each Q and two C's in each P.

Quarts in the kitchen
Stock, broth and buttermilk often come in 1-quart cartons, and a 4-cup liquid measuring cup holds exactly a quart. Four fills of that cup make a gallon. More on the smaller units in cups and ounces in a quart.
